Suncoast Community Legal Service Inc (SCLS) exists for the purpose of addressing disadvantage by providing free legal advice, information, referral, casework and community legal education services to the expanding Sunshine Coast community.
Established in 1984, the Service was recognised as the Community Organisation of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards 2016.
SCLS is based at Maroochydore, with seven outreach locations, and is the only Community Legal Service in our region.
Increasing community demand
Demand for the Service has increased year on year, with 13,000 people having been provided with quality legal advice and information by SCLS over the past three years.
SCLS provides a comprehensive ‘generalist’ service, and additionally offers specialist advice in emergent areas of family law (domestic violence, child protection, elder law), tenancy and homelessness and employment law.
University of the Sunshine Coast Partnership
In 2014 the SCLS moved into its current purpose-built premises in the Maroochydore TAFE building, provided and paid for by the new University of the Sunshine Coast Law School.
For its investment in this partnership, the University is able to offer opportunities for its students to work with the Service’s clients and volunteers in a practical setting from the first year of their degree.
The USC Law Clinic assists in training the next generation of Sunshine Coast lawyers and has increased the Service’s scope for casework.
At the same time, SCLS is available to assist members of the USC student population who may be in need of legal advice.
